If you’ve seen the movie Shortbus (*ahem* hopefully you were 18 or over), then you know who Jay Brannan is. The actor/singer/songwriter from NYC showed up in Toronto last night for a little performance at Supermarket. Armed with just his guitar, his wit, and his charm, Jay had the crowd in the palm of his hands – indulging us with fan favourites “Soda Shop,” “Housewife,” and “Half-Boyfriend.”

If you don’t know who he is, check out his numerous YouTube vlogs, which he has used very successfully to showcase and promote himself. You’ll get a taste of his philosophical lyrics and some interesting irreverent anecdotes (his only flaw may be that he can be a bit too self-indulgent at times). He had plenty to say about Toronto last night (about his hotel, the CN Tower) and he even mentioned his recent run-in with Sarah McLachlan. Very funny. In this sense he is very much like Jann Arden. His songs have meaning and his in between dialogue is hilarious and engaging, so it is only fitting that he would perform a cover of Arden’s “Good Mother” – one of the night’s many highlights.

He is currently working on his debut album, but in the meantime Listen To This Guy Or Else – his MySpace, Facebook and YouTube all have plenty of material.
