M.I.A. to drop mixtape on New Year’s Eve

December 6th, 2010

M.I.A. hasn’t had the greatest year.

What with the controversy with her “Born Free” video, the New York Times incident where she lost her cool and tweeted a writer’s phone number, a bunch of disastrous gigs and of course, her underwhelming and mostly grating third album, /\/\/\Y/\, 2010 wasn’t exactly a year she should look back on fondly.

But in a recent tweet, the Google hatin’ MC/producer said she’ll close out the year with a bang on December 31st by releasing a new mixtape. The tweet reads “vicky leekx mixtape coming new years eve! layin bad minds to rest 2010!”

Vicky Leekx will mark M.I.A.’s first mixtape since 2004’s Piracy Funds Terrorism, the Diplo-produced record that launched her career. Let’s hope freestyling over someone else’s production will help her find her way back, because power drills didn’t exactly cut it.
