You don’t become the queen by debuting albums at number two. Madonna’s twelfth studio album MDNA has debuted at number one on the Billboard chart, marking the singer’s third consecutive decade of pop dominance. With 359,000 units of the album already sold, Madonna is on track to have the best first week of the year with MDNA.
Controversy surrounding the singer has kept the new album on everyone’s radar, from M.I.A. and her middle finger during Madonna’s half time show to Toronto electronic artist deadmau5 starting an online beef with Madonna after he felt she endorsed drug use during last month’s Ultra Music Festival in Miami. And while the reviews for Madonna’s latest record have been mixed, the numbers prove that fans are still hungry for the Material Girl’s brand of pop music.
