Madonna’s Directorial Debut

February 15th, 2008

Madonna, Madonna, Madonna… what hast thou wrought? I just watched the little clip from your directorial debut Filth & Wisdom and I am left scratching my head. Although I’m not a crazy fan of yours, I do think that you’re pretty damn good at what you do and I actually don’t mind your “cute” faux-british accent and I’m the only who didn’t think Swept Away was THAT bad. So it is from this standpoint that I can openly ask: What is this crap?

This clip looks so bloody amateur. What you’ve offered here looks shoddy, contains questionable performances and bizarre dialogue. There is no excuse for this: you’re a multi-millionaire artist with an acclaimed director for a husband!

Maybe since it’s just one clip from the whole movie that, taken out of context, it doesn’t convey the full scope of your vision. I hope that’s the case - perhaps my judgments are a tad premature. I trust in you, Madonna. I trust that you can produce a piece of cinematic art that is relevant.

[Warning: Clip contains scantily clad women and the F word. Envelope pushing, I know...]

UPDATE: Eek - turns out Filth & Wisdom is poo. The film debuted at the Berlin Film Festival on Wednesday and People.com reports that reviews haven’t been good. Britain’s The Guardian found it “so incredibly bad that Berlin festivalgoers were staggering around yesterday in a state of clinical shock, deathly pale and mewing like maltreated kittens.”
