Matt: Freefall Thinking

January 4th, 2008

Yo,

This is how the mind of Matt sometimes works…

- At the beginning of every New Year I wonder, “will there be any defining moments this year in music?”

- This always makes me think of past great moments in music; this year (I guess because I saw the new Dylan movie “I’m Not There”) I started thinking about Dylan’s infamous performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 when he got booed off the stage. There is a lot of speculation as to why the crowd reacted the way they did but the popular belief is that it’s because (Dylan) the folk hero of that generation played with a backing rock band at this particular performance and the folkies did not like that. So it has gone down in history as “the day Dylan plugged in for the first time”.

- THIS got me thinking about some dudes better known for being in loud rock bands who have gone the opposite way of that memorable Dylan moment and .. gotten quieter or totally unplugged. More specifically dudes who were in well known hardcore or punk bands and now have all gravitated to the stripped down sounds of acoustic based songs (but you can still hear the punk and hardcore vibe in the music)… and all are worth a listen.

Walter Schreifels (Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, Youth of Today-NYC 80’s and 90’s)

Virgil Muir, Seth Timothy (Resin - Halifax early 90’s)

Jesse Malin (Heart Attack, D Generation - NYC 80’s and 90’s)

Ted Leo (Animal Crackers, Chisel-Washington early 90’s)

happy new year,
