Matt VS The Cranky Spankys

September 11th, 2007

So I’m in the middle of TIFF purgatory, and it’s been seriously a crazy few days. So much to tell but nothing as hilarious as Naomi Watts and Viggo Mortensen, and when I say hilarious I mean awkward and I wish I could have the 5 minutes of my life back I spent with those 2 on the red carpet for Eastern Promises. Red Carpets are so BLAH for me as a journalist because I love doing interviews, but on a red carpet it’s every media outlet asking the same lame questions “Tell me about this movie”, “what are you wearing”, “are you excited to be here???????????????????????” Give me a break!!!!! SO, I didn’t give into that ass kissing red carpet pit of normalcy and decided to ask legit questions; tie in the movie to appease the delicate genius celebrities but have a sense of humour to try and keep It fresh for not only the “stars” but for me, AND for you guys watching.

That being said; Reese Witherspoon was cool with me talking about Legally Blonde and Jake Gyllenhaal was cool with me asking about losing a role in the 1st Mighty Ducks movie while on their Red Carpet for Rendition, they totally had a sense of humor about it.

On the other hand … the previously mentioned Naomi Watts was too crusty to want to talk about her part of the cult classic Tank Girl or the fact that her dad’s laugh is the one you hear on Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”!!!!! Our friend Viggo is apparently not proud of the 6 albums he has made with guitar freak Buckethead and even came back over to me to because he obviously felt bad for being such a cranky spanky. Look, I understand that they want to have their egos stoked for a job (well?) done on their new movies, and I know that the number of jokers on red carpets is at a all time high, but for the love of Johnny Drama people, life is too short to be too cool for school your whole life … you just make movies, you’re not changing the world.

Wait until you see my chat with Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order) about the 2 Joy Division movies at this year’s festival, it was amazing!!!
