Matt Wells: Glass Tiger

So right off the bat, I was a little bummed that I wouldn’t be jumping on a plane to some random location like Missoula Montana (Huey Lewis) or Cabo (stay tuned over the holidays for THAT episode) for a Where You At, Baby?! The idea of checking out random neighborhoods in Toronto wasn’t very exciting. But that all changed really quickly.

The challenge that we faced for the first time on any of our shoots with Glass Tiger was the fact that we were profiling a full band as opposed to just one person (as was the case with Mike Reno of Loverboy). And like no band I can think of, Glass Tiger have the most interesting shit happening as individuals, totally outside the fame they scored as a band.

Don’t be fooled though, they are STILL a band. They play a handful of shows every year, they are just very very selective and basically do what is fun so there is no pressure; Glass Tiger really has become a hobby for these guys now. Well except for Sam… no mater how successful he is in other projects he is still holding on to the hope of a new Glass Tiger record as you’ll see in the show.

Here are some random thoughts about each dude you won’t see in the show:

Alan Frew: His wife is Marcy the Gourmet Crouton lady and along with her, myself and Alan sat down for a delicious bowl of soup perfectly accentuated with Miss Marcy’s croutons, except for Alan who went with the naked bowl of soup and passed on his wife’s croutons while the camera was rolling!! One of my favourite moments that I wish had made the show. Marcy was super cool and the whole crew left with a supply of croutons, and they are quite tasty (maybe I’ll get more with that crouton plug).

Sam Reid: Has 3 Gold records on his studio wall from his chilled out nature sounds CDs!!!!!!!!!! The same guy you see almost toss his guts into an air sickness bag after doing some loops in an old war plane makes those CDs you can buy at bookstores set up in a kiosk, ya know like sounds of the forest. That blew my mind!!! I got to spend the most time with Sam on the trip back and forth from Ottawa in the Tiger tour bus, we drank Heineken, watched Iron Man and talked music. Every band has that one guy who acts as the defacto manager even when the band HAS a manager; the guy who has the drive and passion to make sure everything is done right… and Sam is that guy in Glass Tiger. My guess is he’ll squeeze one more album outta that band.

Wayne Parker: Is a space geek! I’d get totally lost at some points in the conversation; it was far too smart at some points for me and made me feel very much like the guy who did not pay attention in ANY science class in High School and University. Wayne lost me at Nebula. Musically he was always into heavier sounds than his band mates and when he first heard the demos Alan and Sam had written and recorded which included “don’t forget me (when I’m gone)”; Wayne HATED what he heard!

Al Connelly: Has always seemed to shy away from the camera and still seems MORE comfortable being out of the spotlight than in it. He’s still making music and has a new album on the way that he has been working on with Sam. Pretty much what you see in the show is what I know about Al; making music and working with children and youth with special needs.

Michael Hanson (the other guy): We had actually completed the show when it came to our attention that original drummer Michael Hanson wanted to be involved which was cool with us because it really was a missing part of the band’s story. Michael is going strong working and writing with young musicians, and also had some kind of wedding song business bubbling where he’d write custom lyrics to the tunes of classic songs with bride and groom’s names somehow incorporated… from what I can tell it’s not a main project for him. Other than that I can tell you that some of his gold and platinum GT records have his named spelled wrong; Hansen instead of Hanson.

And there you have it. I must say the entire band (including their manager Rod) are amazing guys and made making this show a lot of fun.

  2. I was very happy to see GLASS TIGER has not been forgoten.Surprisingly my friend has a band from New Market and Al Connely was a writer and funny enough my name was before his on the thank you part of the cd who would of thought not me he is a really nice guy shy but nice.Made me think of the days when I was young and they were cool.

  3. We saw GT twice in 2008, both times at the Stockey Centre in Parry Sound.

Although I’ve been a fan since “Don’t Forget Me” was a hit in Canada (and that was before it was here in the USA), I had not had a chance to see them live. So this was a thrill for me. And I’ve passed their great songs on to our now eight year old daughter, who came with me for both shows (our whole family made the trip up for the first one), and knows the words to a lot of their songs.

Besides being incredibly talented as a band and on their own, they are also among the nicest people I’ve ever met. (Wayne and Sam actually remembered us from the first Parry Sound show and said, “Hey, you made it back!”)

If you do get the chance to see them on tour, go for it! You’ll be more than pleased–you’ll be wowed. They still sound great and they are enjoying themselves, and it shows.

And many thanks to Rod, their manager, for all the help!

    Cheers, George in Rochester NY

  4. It’s awesome to see Glass Tiger featured on TV again. I’ve been a fan for 20 years and to be reunited with the band on TV is a sweet treat. You did a great job!
