Matt Wells on Michael Jackson’s Death

June 26th, 2009

I’m still in the sinking phase of the death of MJ today, I literally saw the news on TV and then got a call to come into work and go live on air to talk about it, so there wasn’t much time for me to really figure out how I feel-even as I type it’s all kind of sinking in. The overwhelming thought that comes back to my brain is this idea of Michael Jackson being a pop culture icon because of the non music things over the years and how that has overshadowed what he has meant and means to the world of music. It has been so easy to make a joke about his very public problems and I hate that it takes his death to feel like everyone will just focus on his musical legacy again.

I really thought and hoped that these London shows in July would be what brought everyone back to just the music and how he has united people with that music like no other person has done or ever will. Ultimately no one really knows the truth about anything MJ has done or been accused of; we just know Mike has always been in the news for some pretty crazy shit and we have been left to decide what we believe, and yeah the guy obviously had issues, his were just spotlighted and glorified into headlines. But today, we lost a man who changed the face of music and lived a life that none of us for a moment can comprehend. I’m really looking forward to the world thinking about Michael Jackson for everything he has achieved in the coming days, I just wish it didn’t take his death to make it so.
