What’s the deal with hip hop dudes loving Sarah McLachlan?
The first story I heard was when Darryl McDaniels (DMC from Run-D.M.C) said her song Angel literally saved his life. He was feeling empty and lost wanting to find our about his natural parents (he was adopted at a young age); wasn’t happy with his life and decided he wanted to kill himself but then heard Angel on the radio and it turned his life around. He eventually reached out to Sarah and they collaborated on this remake.
The next story I very recently came upon is in the book Holler If You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur
where there is a quick mention of when Tupac was in a car with his publicist who had a Sarah McLachlan tape in the tape deck and Tupac asked, “What’s on this tape?” When his publicist said “Trust me, you won’t know this artist” he popped it in, started singing along immediately and said “Oh, Sarah McLachlan…I love her music.”
The DMC story obviously Sarah knows about because they connected and worked together…but I’m curious if she knows that Tupac dug her stuff too? It kinda doesn’t surprise me when I think about it. Tupac was more than just an MC; he was a poet, his lyrics were deeply personal which helped him connect with a generation who could relate with what he was saying. With a COMPLETELY different life but a very similar approach to lyrics, Sarah McLachlan has connected with people through her very personl songs. Maybe that’s why Tupac liked her music…who knows. Either way, high fives to miss Sarah.
