Maximum Enthusiasm Reduction

August 18th, 2004

So you all read Sophia’s blog the other day - the one where she gushed about Duran Duran and posted photos of herself grinning next to them and stuff. Wait, who are Duran Duran again? Before my time, I guess.

Anyway, the reason I wanted to bring that post to your attention is that it was chock full of enthusiasm, something that Sophie normally isn’t keen on.
Oh don’t get me wrong - she’s the boss in these parts and she naturally wants us to be psyched about the work we’re doing, but she gets a bit cranky if we’re overly enthusiastic about it. I mean like if we’re REAAAAALLY ENTHUSIASTIC!!!!!!!! about it. To crystallize your understanding of this concept, not that you’re dummies, but just in case, I’ll give you an example of a typical exchange here at the amoeba desk:

Justin (jumping up and down, shrieking): “HOLY CRAP! MEGADETH IS BACK - THEY’RE GONNA TOUR - NEW ALBUM - DAVE MUSTAINE, NICK MENZA, HOOOOOOLY CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP!”

Sophia: [takes off headphones, turns, fixes me with blank stare designed for maximum enthusiasm reduction]

Justin: “Uhm…yeah…back to the Top Tens poll…”

This is merely a representative exchange - this exact situation might or might not have happened. But you catch my drift now. And frankly, I don’t blame her for looking down on my behaviour cause I’m sure it’s highly annoying. As a side note, she also hates it when I don’t finish my sentences and just trail off…

But anyway, this is why I was shocked to see Sophie getting all loopy and enthusiastic about Duran Duran and posting photos of herself on the blog (she really hates photos of herself usually). My point is that I think…and correct me if I’m wrong…but I think I can safely be enthusiastic now.

Just to be sure, I’m going to slowly work some enthusiasm into everyday conversation…thusly:

Sophia: “So Justin, did you finish that task I assigned you for that artist feature for [insert random disco-revival indie rock act] yet?”

Justin: “No, I’ve been too excited just thinking about the upcoming Tool album, due in 2005, to do any work. Since last week. I’ve just been sitting here, rocking back and forth.”

Sophia: [blank stare]

I figure this will warm her up for the full infusion of enthusiasm to come. Damn clever, eh? That’s why they pay me the big bucks.
