Last year Mika played a small show at the Mod Club and I was quite upset that I missed it – so much so that when I heard that he was coming back to Toronto I vowed to myself that I wouldn’t miss him again. With an amazing voice range comparable to Freddie Mercury and stage presence that you can’t deny, I was so excited for this show!
Mika played the second show of his Dodgy Holiday tour in Toronto last night to a crowd of all ages (meaning one could spot many young gaggles of girls and their moms). As much as I love raw gigs, it had been a while since I’d gone to just a fun, happy, or as Mika put it, “completely big and fantastical” show.
Mika hit the stage opening with Relax (Take It Easy) and the packed crowd went crazy! The boy really went all out! There was flashing lights, flowers decorating the stage, dancers and more!
He played most of his debut album Life in Cartoon Motion, sneaking in some new songs her and there. Filled with energy, Mika and the rest of the gang jumped and danced around the stage; there wasn’t a dull moment. During Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) a giant woman was blown up, and Love Today included a giant skeleton on stage! The night ended with giant balloons, confetti and streamers throughout the crowd!
While Mika might not be everyone’s cup of tea, the crowd seemed to adore it. I personally loved it! Theatrics, confetti, and all!
*yes, there are a lot of exclamation marks, but the night is worthy of them (!)
