Mixtape Mondays

July 11th, 2011

This weeks mixtape is Max Tannone’s ‘GhostFunk’. If you’re not familiar with Max Tannone than get familiar. Tannone hit the music scene in 2009 with Jaydiohead, a remix album that fused Jay-Z and, you got it, Radiohead. The mixtape made waves in the music industry and even got attention from Jay-Z saying, “there are 3 or 4 real gems on Jaydiohead” – pretty good for a first album.  Tannone went on to produce other remix albums like Mos Dub, Dub Kweli, and  Doublecheck Your Head, which was commissioned by the Beastie Boys to promote the album re-release of ‘Check Yourself’ by remixing Beastie Boys with themselves.

This time around Tannone has mixed Ghostface Killah and Afrofunk. If you aren’t familiar with Ghostface Killah than this album probably won’t even sound like a “remix”. If anything this is just a schooling in Ghostface and who’s who of Afrofunk. The album features afrofunk artists like The Funkees, Lijadu Sisters, Gyedu Blay-Ambolley, Sir Victor Uwaifo, and more. So either get to know these artists or get reacquainted because this is a perfect summer soundtrack. If you like what you hear than check out Max’s other remixes.
