Fall Out Boy The Take Over, The Break’s Over
Fall Out Boy have had quite a year. The band’s fourth album Infinity On High debuted at #1 on Billboard and has since been certified platinum (that’s a million copies, folks). Then they performed at the MTV VMAs in September with a gaggle of musical guests, and now they’re just finishing up a 47-date stint as headliners for the Honda Civic Tour. And somewhere in there, Pete Wentz became enamoured with - and later engaged to - punk-pop princess Ashlee Simpson. They’ve collaborated with both Kanye and Timbaland, namedropped Jay-Z, and released a rock ‘n roll cover of Mikey J.’s Beat It with the help of John Mayer. Huh? If these guys hadn’t already confirmed their ability to grab the attention of music royalty across the board, they sure have now.
Flo Rida Low f. T-Pain
Flo Rida was virtually unknown until Low stormed the charts in late 2007. Whether you’re a fan or not, the stats are truly mind-numbing: in addition to reaching #1 pretty much everywhere and holding the position longer than any other song in 2007, Low is currently the bestselling digital download of all time - over 3.3 million sales. W T F. Don’t try and tell me you didn’t have Low as your ringtone at some point in the past six months, cause I know the truth. Now it’s time for you guys to decide whether Flo Rida’s had his fifteen minutes or if he’s just getting started.
Kanye West Stronger
Kanye really, really wants to win something. He cried when he didn’t win any of the five MTV VMAs he was nominated for, vowing to never return to the awards show again. So maybe he’ll be comforted by the possibility of winning MMVA People’s Choice Favourite International Video? You gotta admit, Stronger IS a great jam, due in part to its sampling of one of Daft Punk’s most amazing songs, Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. In September, Kanye pushed the release date for his third album, The Graduation, back a week so it’d coincide with 50 Cent’s album release date. A competition ensued, with 50 promising to end his career as a solo rapper if Kanye’s album sold more copies than his, but later retracted the statement since it clearly did (to date, 2.5 million for Kanye vs. 1.7 million for 50 Cent). Now Kanye’s busy touring North America as the headliner of his own Glow In The Dark Tour with Rihanna, Lupe Fiasco and N.E.R.D.
Rihanna Don’t Stop The Music
The last twelve months have really been a whirlwind for 20-year-old Rihanna. Her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad started out with the monster hit Umbrella, which was THE song of summer 2007 and has since been parodied and covered by dozens of artists, including Mandy Moore, Marie Digby, Travis Barker, Tegan And Sara and My Chemical Romance. Rihanna followed up Umbrella with four more explosive singles in ‘07/’08, insured her legs for a million bucks, got her hair cropped into an asymmetrical bob that was dubbed the year’s “Rachel” by a jillion magazines, and now she’s part of Kanye West’s 43 city Glow In The Dark tour with Lupe Fiasco and N.E.R.D. Phew.
Timbaland Presents OneRepublic Apologize
Attribute the song to whoever you want, but this song slowly crept up late last year and has since grown on everyone who’s heard it. OneRepublic’s original version lacked a bit of final polish that only a blockbuster producer like Timbaland could provide (notably, a stronger backbeat and a coupla “yeahs” thrown in there in case you doubted his involvement). The three-minute video is the fifth most watched YouTube video of all time with nearly 54 million views!
And Timothy Z. Mosley, aka Timbaland, was also extremely busy in 2007, recording a steady stream of “ticka-ticka” embellishments and lending his producer skills to artists like Madonna, Ashlee Simpson, Nell Furtado, Justin Timberlake, Pussycat Dolls, Coldplay and Bjork. And oh yeah - he also released his own album, Timbaland Presents Shock Value, which included the blockbuster hits The Way I Are, Give It To Me and of course, the remix of Apologize.
