MMVA08: Best Video

June 13th, 2008

So the MMVAs are almost upon us. Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve been breaking down all of the award categories – and now we have saved the biggest and best for last: Best Video. Who will take home the merchandise? Wait ’til Sunday night, bitches.

Feist1234 [Watch]

There is a reason this colourful dance video was used in ads for the launch of the new iPod nano and went on to spark a hilarious parody on MadTV – it’s good. Damn good. In true Feist fashion, the entire video has no edits and is one continous shot, capturing a fresh and fun 4 minutes of choreography for a fun and infectious piece of music.

BellyRidin’ f. Mario Winans [Watch]

Crisp blue water, lush green leaves, shiny SUVs, stylish motorcycles and one impressive speedboat. Oh yeah – and Belly. And sexy ladies. And a gorgeous nighttime Toronto skyline. It all looks so slick that it makes you wonder, Was the video for Ridin’ funded by the Ontario Tourism Board? Either way, if this is the life of a succesful rapper, the rest of us are seriously considering a career change.

HedleyFor The Nights I Can’t Remember [Watch]

The boys of Hedley know how to have a good time. They are constantly up to some sort of shenanigans (most of the time whilst naked), but when it comes to their video for For The Nights I Can’t Remember, they got serious. Beautifully shot, with its back-and-forth between the piano bar and frontman Jacob Hoggard’s James Dean-esque persona, it showed a softer side of of the young Canadian rockers. This sweet, mellow waltz is a song we’ll always remember.

illScarlettNothing Special [Watch]

Co-director Steve Mottershead recently mentioned that the original budget for illScarlett’s Nothing Special video was so low that he had to throw in some extra cash out of his own pocket. The amazing thing is, you’d never know the shoot was financially challenged – the great video matches the equally great song, as we follow frontman Alex Norman through the walls of a suburban house, to end up in quite the raucous backyard party. The suburbs never looked so good.

Simple PlanWhen I’m Gone [Watch]

We’re glad that Simple Plan are finally back with new material, because when they are gone, their fans become quite rabid. The video for When I’m Gone makes you forget they had gone on a little hiatus – it’s pure Simple Plan goodness, slick and stylish as usual. Even fellow MMVA guest, Perez Hilton, makes an appearance. Welcome back, boys. When I’m Gone is great, but when you’re actually gone, puppies weep.
