June 10th, 2008
The MMVAs are just around the corner, so we have decided it’s the perfect time for MuchMusic.com to give out our own awards. Below is a list of categories and videos that deserve their own special trophies in what we like to call the Rock Rewards 2008. Enjoy!
BEST SHOWCASE OF FOOTWEAR
WINNER: Yelle - A Cause Des Garcons (Watch It)

This French video accomplishes two things: (1) it makes you want to dance, and (2) it makes you yearn for the days when everyone was sporting a new pair of Reebok Pumps. That them there is what I call dancin’ shoes. Now who is gonna bring back British Knights…?
RUNNER UP: Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (Watch It)
BEST UNEXPLAINED CELEBRITY CAMEO
WINNER: Nelly Furtado in Fritz Helder & The Phantoms - Making A Scene (Watch It)

At first glance, when you see Nelly Furtado in the video for Making A Scene, the first single from the stylish Fritz Helder & The Phantoms, it makes you go “Hmmm?” - but sometimes a celebrity cameo is more than meets the eye. You see, it turns out that some of the members of Fritz Helder & The Phantoms are actually Furtado’s back-up dancers who have decided to step out on their own. Aw, she’s just lending her support. See? I’ve cleared it up for you and now it makes sense. You’re welcome.
RUNNER UP: Lindsay Lohan in N.E.R.D. - Everyone Nose (All The Girls Standing In The Line For The Bathroom) (Watch It)
MOST IN NEED OF A BATH
WINNER: Ryan Cabrera - Say (Watch It)

I only really know this guy because he used to date Ashlee Simpson and would show up on her reality show occasionally (not that I actually watched that show… *ahem*). Recently we saw Cabrera pop up on our radar again with his video for Say - and he’s looking quite greasy. Channeling his inner Jack White, he’s more bedraggled than hip, thus in desperate need of a bath, a haircut and a real job.
RUNNER UP: Heidi Montag - Higher (Watch It)
BEST VIDEO FOR WHICH UNFLATTERING 3D GLASSES ARE NEEDED
WINNER: Missy Elliott - Ching-A-Ling (Watch It)

2008 is quickly becoming the year in which we see a resurgence of the glorious format that is 3D. Later this year we’ll see some actual movies come to theatres in this format (namely Journey to the Center of the Earth), however 3D lends itself well to 4-minute music videos. So if you like the idea of Missy Elliott waving baseball bats and tambourines in your face, then Ching-A-Ling is for you. If that idea freaks you out, understandable. Now, the only issue: finding 3D glasses.
RUNNER UPS: Bjork - Wanderlust (Watch It)
BEST HOOKED ON PHONICS VIDEO
WINNER: Justice - DVNO (Watch It)

I have no idea what this song is really about, but no worries - the video is a feast for the eyes. The only issue is you have to work for it (ie. read along - ugh). But if reading isn’t your thing, just look at the pretty colours! Oh - and I dare you to try to get this song out of your head. It’s simply impossible.
RUNNER UP: Kanye West - Good Life (Watch It)
BEST UPGRADE
WINNER: Robyn - With Every Heartbeat (Watch It)

Who knew that in 1997 when Swedish pop singer Robyn was singing Show Me Love, that over 10 years later (with a banging new self-titled album) she’d now be begging for our love? And we’re more than happy to give it to her. Her first single, With Every Heartbeat, reminded us that the Swedes have a knack for killer melodies and thus the reason why said album is on heavy rotation on our mp3 players. We’ll take Robyn 2008 over Robyn 1997 anyday.
RUNNER UP: Jesse McCartney - Leavin’ (Watch It)
BEST HOOK UP
WINNER: Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown - No Air (Watch It)

Let’s just say this video made us question who Chris Brown is really dating. Enough said.
RUNNER UP: Flo Rida & T-Pain - Low (Watch It)
ONE SHOT AWARD
WINNER: Feist - I Feel It All (Watch It)

One camera, one continuous shot, a whole lot of fireworks, and a crazed Feist running around banging on barrels with a big stick. Who knows how many takes it took to get this right, but we’re diggin’ it. Feist: she’s your one shot eye-candy stop.
RUNNER UP: Feist - 1234 (Watch It)
WAY TO MAKE US CENSOR YOU AWARD
WINNER: Girlicious - Stupid Sh*t (Watch It)

They come from the youth-oriented CW, they have a following of teenaged girls, and they go ahead and release a song called Stupid Sh*t. WTF? We’re all very excited for their MMVA performance, but way to make us censor you, Girls.
RUNNER UP: Holy F**k - Milkshake (Watch It)
BEST USE OF SCARLETT JOHANSSON
WINNER: The Teenagers - Starlett Johansson (Watch It)

With their broken English and sing-speak stylings, The Teenagers have put their love letter to actress Scarlett Johansson to song. Well-researched in their subject, what starts off as creepy turns out to be oddly sweet. C’mon - if some cute obsessed French boy from a hip band proposed to you, you’d love it as well.
RUNNER UP: Scarlett Johansson - Falling Down (Watch It)
There you have it, folks! Are there any other honorable mentions that we may have missed?
