MMVA09: Video of the Year

June 8th, 2009

The competition is indeed fiercest in this, the pinnacle of MMVA categories: Video of the YEAR. Here is chosen the video that is the cream of the crop, the toast of the town, the one video that’ll get to ceremoniously beeetch-slap all the other videos because IT won, and they lost. And you know it totally would too, if music videos had arms.

All the candidates have multiple MMVA nominations, and all deserve the win! So check out this year’s noble contenders, and choose your side!

Danny FernandesPrivate Dancer (Watch!)

Aside from the smoke machine and the flashing lights, there’s not a lot of pomp and ceremony going on here. Danny Fernandes is bringing us a straight up super-dancey video to match his super-dancey song “Private Dancer”. Coincidence? I think not. But it’s all for the good, because Fernandes gets to show off exactly why he’s become such a popular name in the mainstream these days – check out his skills on the floor! If they’re enough to win him the trophy in this star-studded category is yet to be seen…

K-OS4,3,2,1 (Watch!)

Back in 2005, K-OS picked up MMVAs, and now he’s back and fighting for three more. You know he can do it – in the video for “4,3,2,1″ alone K-OS fights mannequins and gets involved in crazy martial arts battles in a shopping mall that would make any lesser artist tremble in his or her stylish sneakers. So the battle for Video of the Year should be no sweat for him, right?

Marianas TrenchCross My Heart (Watch!)

Since the release of their second album Masterpiece Theatre back in February, punk-poppers Marianas Trench have sworn to make this year a good one, and they’re well on the way. Their video for “Cross My Heart” is actually really sweet, even in its hyper moments; ghost-like and streaky-haired Josh Ramsay trails the girl he misses down the street, even going so far as conjuring up a fancy-pants parade to try and get her attention. We’ll have to wait and see if the band has energy enough to take home the prize in this competition.

NicklebackGotta Be Somebody (Watch!)

I’ve stopped counting how many award nominations Nickleback has this year because it’s just getting ridiculous. The video for “Gotta Be Somebody” is certainly attention grabbing, and pretty much confirms that Nickleback’s music is powerful enough to change the world (or destroy stuff); the band plays at a old-world coliseum and on a modern bridge, and the song’s chorus cracks the ground with its power every time. What’ll happen if they win the MMVA for best video? Queen Street watch out!

The StillsBeing Here (Watch!)

Montreal’s representatives for this prestigious category must have lost their heads in their excitement for being nominated. Which is my only explanation for their video, in which vocalist Tim Fletcher gets a bag of heads from a magician (who looks strangely familiar) and travels around town to return these heads to his band mates. Is there an MMVA win (or two) left in that bag of tricks for this band?
