So today, MOD gave me, Laura Krause, the chance to intern at Underground Operations recording studio. It was a total blast and I’m so glad they gave me this opportunity! I’ve always been interested in the Canadian music industry above all others because we have way better bands including The Latency, Marianas Trench and Faber Drive.
So I was pretty pumped to go see what it’s actually like behind the scenes. Getting to ride over in the MuchMusic van was incredibly awesome in and of itself. I felt so important and special. Then when we got there, the place was completely different from what I expected but in the best way possible. The whole atmosphere had a perfect balance between relaxation and chilling with friends to serious work and determination, as well as an overall sense of importance throughout. I’m not sure if that is the word I’m looking for, maybe prestigious, but either way I felt privileged to be there and that it was a very legit place within the Canadian music industry.

Katie, my boss, was awesome. I can’t imagine a better boss. She was very nice and helpful and super relatable. She never once made me feel like I was just a stupid intern or that I was in the way or not helpful. She showed me the ropes and let me in on every aspect of the recording business. She even left me alone with the merch and the phones for a while. For all she knew I could have pocketed a few shirts while I was in there (what, who said that??? Just kidding, no worries I didn’t touch anything.)
I also got to meet Ian from The Artist Life. I wasn’t expecting to meet the awesome guitarist and singer. Thankfully I’d met a few other musicians before so I wasn’t completely star struck when he walked in but inside I was freaking out a teeny bit. I can’t believe that now I get to go to their concert as a VIP which I have never done. He was such a nice guy and just so real and chill. Just goes to show that musicians are people too.
My experience at Underground Operations was one I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. I now feel like I have that bit of experience and that extra edge to help me further my career in the Canadian music industry. I met some awesome people while doing it. If any of you have any musical aspirations, you can’t miss out on this opportunity.
See if MOD will give you a chance by emailing ondemand@muchmusic.com. Tune into MOD Wednesday to see what else happened during my internship!
