This struck me as particularly hilarious – outspoken post-rock maestros Mogwai are up in arms about a new noise law that’s being passed in the UK that limits the allowable volume at concerts and clubs and are urging fans to sign a petition against the noise ban.
The reason that this is hilarious is that Mogwai are well known for their cochlea-shattering loud shows, and I attribute 75% of my middle hearing loss to the five times I’ve seen them live (WITH earplugs). Their shows are so loud that anyone who’s not wearing ear protection either leaves mid-show or spends the evening uncomfortably jamming their fingers into their ears. It’s unbelievable.
So, should there be a volume limit at shows? Should clubs be required to sell earplugs (IMO yes, cause sometimes you just forget to bring them)? Or is it your own fault for going to so many shows?
