In anticipation of April’s MTV Movie Awards, I decided it was important to reflect on past moments that made this awards show stand out. Unlike other awards shows, the MTV Movie Awards doesn’t take itself too seriously. Just look at the categories like Best Kiss or Best Shirtless Performance. The MTV Movie Awards is not the Oscars. It’s not trying to be. It is always an unapologetically provocative and over the top show. That is why we watch.
Below are my picks of five unforgettable moments from the MTV Movie Awards history:
1. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams recreate The Notebook kiss
Before Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, there was Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. The two Canadians started dating after meeting in the chick flick that all guys deny they love: The Notebook. The couple won Best Kiss in 2005 and surprised audiences by re-creating the famous scene on stage.
2. Emma Stone wins MTV’s Trailblazer Award
Emma Stone won MTV’s first ever Trailblazer Award honouring her short but diverse career. For a 23-year-old, Stone had already achieved a lot at that point. She had box office hits with Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Help and Easy A. A few months after she would star in the Spider-Man reboot as Gwen Stacy. Although still very young, Stone’s delivered an acceptance speech that was classy and wise beyond her years.
3. Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen kiss
Unlike Gosling and McAdams’ kiss, this one was not swoon-worthy. Ferrell and Baron Cohen won Best Kiss in 2007 for Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. In tradition of past Best Kiss winners, the two locked lips on stage. But unlike previous winners, Ferrell and Baron Cohen had a full on make out session. It was comedy gold.
4. Eminem becomes part of Bruno’s joke
When Sacha Baron Cohen’s alter ego Bruno hosted the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, he brought his signature offensive sense of humour. One of the memorable pranks he pulled was on rapper Eminem. Bruno, dressed as an angel in a thong, fell from the sky. He just happened to land on Eminem, who did not look like he was expecting it at all. Eminem’s reaction was so convincing that audiences had no idea he was in on the joke.
5. Awkward acceptance speeches from the cast of Twilight
Non-Twihards have had to suffer with countless uncomfortable acceptance speeches from Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, for years now. Whether you think their awkwardness is endearing or unintentionally funny, you can’t deny they’re memorable. A notable Twilight moment was at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards when Stewart accidentally dropped her golden popcorn after giving her speech.
