We saw the world differently after we walked out of the movie theatre for these films. Don’t believe me? Watch the trailer for Oceans (after the jump) – your world with change.
Avatar:
Who hasn’t seen this movie? (watch the DVD – its out today) Even without the 3D-hype, this movie rocked with its effects – the emotion in the faces of the Na’vi people when their Home Tree is burned to the ground – that’s exactly the effect humans have on wildlife and ecosystems. James Cameron scored on that one.
The Day After Tomorrow:
The most horrible day in history caught up Jake Gyl and Emmy Rossom in New York City. We caught a glimpse of one hell of a storm/disaster/end of the world where the effects of humans have caused temperatures around the world to clash, and ultimately bring about another Ice Age.
Earth:
I’m jonesing to hear James Earl Jones narrate one of the most acclaimed documentaries of 2008. While I haven’t seen it, I’ve heard the Blu-Ray experience practically makes you one with nature – it takes you from the North Pole to the South Pole over the four seasons and shows how the Earth reacts and changes to its environment.
Erin Brockovich:
The Femme Fatale for corporations everywhere, this tough chick took down a massive business company as they polluted an entire community just to cut costs. Based on a true story, Julia Roberts Brockovich showed us that justice can be dished out.
Fern Gully:
The 90s version of Avatar (without the digital effects, 3D, or live-action) was an animated film where a bunch of hip rainforest creatures set out to right the minds of a vicious construction company bent on cutting down the tropical paradise.
March of the Penguins:
Another documentary I’ve been recommended was narrated by Morgan Freeman (is there anything we won’t listen to from him? I think not!). This film shows the lives of a series of penguins as they survive, find a mate, and give birth; showing animals have the same survival instincts we do, and need to be respected.
Oceans:
Released today, Oceans takes us through everything that lies beneath the waves of Earth’s waters. A follow-up to Earth, the film promises more breathtaking visuals and depth as they show the relationships of Earth’s underwater ecosystems.
The Simpsons:
Spider-Pig aside, animation’s First Family battled pollution and garbage as its main villain (with poor Green Day as a casualty!). While Homer was ready to let his frenemies rot in their glass-domed wasteland, he eventually came back to save the day.
