MUCH held a contest to send one lucky music fan to Montreal for all three days of this year’s Osheaga Music Festival. From checking out amazing bands like Vampire Weekend, Tegan and Sara and Mumford and Sons to sightseeing in Montreal, contest winner Brittany made the most of her time at the fest.
They say that the meaning of Osheaga has Iroquois roots, that it may mean “people shaking hands”, but I think they must be wrong. Without a doubt, Osheaga means “you’re about to have the most kick a** time of your life!”
I honestly had no idea what I was in for when MuchMusic called me on that fateful Wednesday. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve attended my fair share of music festivals and concerts, heard my fair share of bands play, but Osheaga was unlike anything I thought it would be.
I called up my friend Alyssa, who immediately agreed to take the time off work and come with me to Montreal. With hardly enough time to stock up on festival attire, we were on our way!
With a short train ride and early check-in at our Osheaga hotel, Maison d’Aga, we arrived early on Day 1, hoping to check out the sights and sounds. That plan got a little sidetracked when we found the hammocks in the Virgin Mobile #MEMBERSLOUNGE. We parked ourselves there with a great view of the stage for probably longer than necessary, but if there’s one thing that can force me out of a hammock, it’s Ellie Goulding. We made our way to the stage where she was playing, to get the best view possible of her abs show.
Ellie was awesome, just like I knew she would be, and then came Vampire Weekend and Phoenix, who were nothing short of amazing. Day 1 = success!
Day 2 was such a magical day! We arrived shortly after the park opened and were so excited to see almost everyone in the lineup! Jimmy Eat World was such an amazing blast from the past for us, and Tegan and Sara are of course a long time favorite. I must say though that the highlights for us came later in the night, starting with Imagine Dragons. I am such a huge fan of this band and they did not disappoint. I fell in love with them all over again. Next up? Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. OK so who doesn’t love Thrift Shop? No one, that’s who! But trust me when I say that that wasn’t even the highlight of their performance. I’m sure that by now you’ve all heard about this moment – it made national headlines and Twitter went CRAZY, but Macklemore asked Tegan and Sara to sing his inspirational Song Same Love with him. That moment gave me chills. Day 2 = an even bigger success!
On day 3 we woke up simultaneously pumped and a little teary eyed about our last day at the festival. On our way into the park, it rained (hard) for about five minutes, but luckily we packed our ponchos, and by the time we actually made it in, it had stopped, and we were ready to rock. We had the best time watching Big Boi, and later, Kendrick Lamar. I was SO excited to see the Lumineers, another band that I adore, and they, like all the others, did not disappoint.
Finally, the moment that we had all been waiting for arrived – MUMFORD AND SONS! Watching these guys in concert is what dreams are made of. They completely mesmerized us and it was the absolute best way to wrap up an amazing weekend. They finished of their set by shooting a ton of confetti into the crowd. You couldn’t have paid me to wipe the cheesy smile off my face!
Let me just sidetrack here for a moment and tell you about the fact that it was one of my best friends’ birthdays on this very same weekend. This friend (who lives in Halifax I might add) just so happened to be at Osheaga, and Alyssa and I got to celebrate her 24th birthday with her. I can’t even begin to describe how much it meant to all of us to be reunited at the happiest place on earth!
After a weekend filled with friends, music (old favorites and new), dancing, laughing, hammocks, lemonade, cold beer, lots of sunshine, a little bit of rain, lots of bathroom breaks, probably way too many and hot dogs and fries (this of course, is subjective), and memories that will last forever, I can’t even begin to thank MuchMusic and Virgin Mobile enough for this awesome opportunity. I had the absolute greatest time, and I will most certainly be back at Osheaga next year!Tweet
