This year MuchMusic sent lucky winner Olivia and her bestie to the Brit Awards with tickets to the show, airfare, hotel accommodations and spending money. Check out Olivia’s blog on their trip, including partying in Piccadilly and hanging out at the Brit Awards aftershow!
Our trip to London to attend the Brits was an amazing time! The trip was short and we felt like we were partying like rockstars being flown in for the event and back out. We flew overnight on Sunday, which was going to be awesome so we would land in London Monday morning and wake up refreshed, but of course we were both way too excited to sleep on the plane.
When we arrived in London we decided to attempt the tube from Heathrow to Kings Cross, which was a crazy and crowded experience, but when we walked out of the station to see that our hotel was basically a castle we were too excited to even acknowledge the trek that we had just done.
We were super early for check in since it was only 10 am London time, so we dropped our bags and decided to explore. We were surprised at how quickly we understood the maps and where we were. We went to Oxford Street where there is amazing shopping, SoHo which is the theatre district and is so beautiful and Picadilly Circus, kind of like Dundas Square or Times Square, but smaller. Everyone had told us that Picadilly was the place to go at night time for fun, but during the day we couldn’t see the hype. When we went back later that night it was like a different world! So. Much. Fun. We also went to the other touristy spots of London which were all pretty close together. We saw Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, The London Eye (the big Ferris wheel that moves at about 2km/h lol) and a lot of other really old and beautiful buildings. We had walked around for hours and when we went back to our hotel, the jet lag hit us hard and we ended up sleeping for hours before waking up for a fun night out in London, including dinner and dancing at a club in Picadilly Circus. We called it an early night because we had the Brits the next day, no biggie ;)
Tuesday was about all things BRITS. When the MuchMusic rep came to the hotel and dropped off our tickets we knew it was actually happening!!
We had a big lunch, a big nap and then started getting ready for the show, dancing to the BBC and listening to their broadcast from the red carpet! When we arrived at the O2 stadium you could hear everyone screaming from the red carpet that was blocked off and to the side of the stadium. The big monitors hanging above showed us that Jessi J had arrived and that’s why everyone was screaming. We walked the red carpet inside and had some pictures taken. We felt like celebrities!
Once we got to the main entrance to the floor there was still lots of time for sipping champagne and getting to mingle with everyone in our section. It was full of music industry people from the US, Canada and the UK. Then the show began! The show was UNREAL! Coldplay opened the night with an amazing show, the host was funny, especially when Adele flipped him off for cutting her acceptance speech short, Rhianna looked amazing and both of us had tears in our eyes when we Adele preformed. Her voice live is like nothing you will ever hear. Same with Florence and the machine! So powerful! Blur’s performance was definitely our favourite – they closed the night with a five song set, which had everyone in the stadium and the celebs at their tables standing and dancing.
After the show we went to the After Party that MuchMusic had given us passes to with our tickets. It was a lot of fun with many local celebrities, industry guys and athletes (no David Beckham unfortunately lol). The end of the night was sad and we didn’t want our trip to be over so we tried to make it last. The next day was a pouty day of us walking the city, drinking tea and scheming ways for us to stay in London. We flew out of Heathrow Airport at dinner time on Wednesday and landed back in Toronto by 9 pm.
We could not believe the experience we had just had, the places we were able to see, the performances we were able to witness. It all was sort of like one whirlwind dream. We both want to thank MuchMusic for giving us this chance, it was definitely the time our lives !!
