Music legend Etta James has passed away at the age of 73 after her losing her battle with leukemia. The singer, who also suffered from dementia, passed away in a hospital in California this morning with her son and husband by her side. James, who was playfully known as Miss Peaches after singing in the blues band Peaches in 1950, would have turned 74 next Wednesday.
Winning six Grammys and becoming an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, James’ impact on the music industry is still felt today. In 2008, Beyonce famously played Etta in the film Cadillac Records. Go to any wedding or watch an audition on singing shows like American Idol and The Voice and there’s a good chance you’ll hear Etta’s timeless song, At Last.
But one of the biggest ways Etta’s name has been brought back into the spotlight recently is with the huge success of Flo Rida’s song Good Feeling, which samples James’ hit Something’s Got A Hold On Me. Check out a performance below from 1962 of Etta performing the track. From the make-up to the music, Etta’s presence is seen in some of the greatest singers of the decade, including Adele, Christina Aguilera (who has publicly performed Something’s Got A Hold On Me) and the late Amy Winehouse.
