Somewhere between seeing the Glow In The Dark tour two weeks ago and M.I.A. last night I realized that this is a great time for music. I’m not gonna lie, when the millennium rolled around and popular music moved from boy bands to rap-rock I was very scared. Boy bands were pretty bad but Limp Bizkit was absolutely rock bottom.
But if I’ve learned anything from celebrity fall-outs it’s that you need to hit rock bottom before you can recover. 50 Cent came in and made hip-hop so much more competitive and all of a sudden it was sharp again. Then Kanye rolled in casually and pushed everyone even further. We had shows like The O.C. (on Much!) that gave a huge audience instant access to some genuinely good indie music, and commercials have been pushing that trend even further. (I discovered The Walkmen through Saturn and I don’t care). Feist is one of the biggest artists in the world right now which just goes to show how far popular music has come.
I feel like one day we’ll all be looking back at this stretch of time as one of the best to ever happen to music.
