Monica was our lucky winner to spend a day in Toronto with Fall Out Boy! Watch le date go down tonight at 6:30pm ET, and for now read what she has to say about the experience!
May 5th, 2009. That was the day I got to meet Fall Out Boy. It was also the day I got to experience something that is just so surreal to most people – meeting your idols. From shopping to going up the CN Tower to the concert, it was an amazing experience that I’ll never forget. But it took a while to get there.
It all started when a friend of mine happened to show me this contest online. I didn’t have cable TV at the time, so I was really lucky I found out about it before it closed. And I mean REALLY lucky. I had a mere five days to write, shoot and edit my video. It was stressful, and even though I got weird looks from my neighbours when I screamed ‘I love Fall Out Boy’ as loud as I could, I was determined. And eventually, I got it done.
I was so nervous when I submitted it. I couldn’t even watch the video myself because it was too mortifying! I got my friends to consult me, and I finally built up the courage to submit it. Never in a million years did I think my stupid little video was going to win or even be in the top four. My friends gave me hope, but when I didn’t get contacted in two weeks after the closing I felt defeated. I wanted this more than anything. But the battle wasn’t over yet.
About a month later, I got an email from MuchMusic saying I made it into the top four. Me! I made it! I couldn’t believe it. For the next few hours I ran around my house jumping and screaming and telling everyone I knew. It was unbelievable. During the next few days I ran around like a monkey trying to collect all the forms and fax them in time. When I did, I just had to play the waiting game. I just couldn’t sit still!
Then the day came. That same day all of my friends and I had soccer practice, so we had to scurry our butts over to my house afterwards and set up as quickly as we could. My house was too small, so we had to do it in the cold freezing rain. Then my dad told me that Much was here so we waited inside, giggling like idiots until they came and knocked on our door. About 6 girls (and 1 guy) ran out screaming, anxious to find out if I won or not. Unfortunately we had to re-do the take countless times so by the time we got the envelope we were super excited.
We were then handed the envelope. My fingers were trembling, so when they said I could open it I ripped the envelope in half. After I salvaged the paper inside, I read it slowly and carefully until I reached the word ‘congratulations’. After that I started to freak out and scream like crazy. I think I might have said ‘oh my god’ a million times, but I didn’t care. I finally got to live my dream, and it was just so surreal. Just when I thought the surprises were finished, Devon walks into my yard, and he takes us to see the huge white limo in my driveway. It was pretty awesome!
I just had to wait one more week until the trip. Unfortunately, I caught a nasty flu a few days later, so that really sucked. During the last few days before the trip, I stayed in bed all the time, sick as a dog. I still managed to pull through and on Tuesday, May 5th I hopped in the limo at 8:15 AM with my best friend as we prepared to head to Toronto.
Our first stop was to go vintage shopping! This was pretty exciting. Devon handed us $200 to buy some new clothes and sweet sunglasses. After we picked what we wanted, Devon helped us pick an outfit to wear on our dates. By this time my heart was racing – I was super nervous to meet Fall Out Boy! Next, we stopped in front of the CN tower. Devon told us that they were preparing our activities, so we sat around for about 20 minutes being nervous and jittery. Then, something really unexpected happened. Devon told us to turn around, and all I see is Pete Wentz staring me in the face.
It was one of the scariest things I have ever seen in my life. I was not expecting that at all. It was like something out of a horror movie. After a few seconds to realize what just happened, I peer around Pete’s shoulder to see the rest of the band. And then it hit me. Oh my god. It’s Fall Out Boy. It’s actually them. It was so weird to see them in real life. They always seemed so untouchable to me. Me, a girl living in the suburbs meeting THEM? No freaking way. But somehow, it happened.
I greet them, super excited, and then we head inside to play some air hockey and other arcade games. It was a lot of fun. After that we head up on the elevator to the glass floor, which was cool in a weird way. Andy was scared of heights, so FOB’s bodyguard was lifting him up and making him stand on the glass. It was pretty funny. We then head up to eat some yummy lunch. We talk to them, and then Joe hands us concert tickets. It all happened way too fast. After we finished our amazing lunch, we got them to sign our stuff and gave them huge bear hugs. We were sad to see them go, but we were happy to know that we had front row seats to their MOD appearance, and we got to see them live that night.
Needless to say, the whole day was an amazing experience. The boys were amazing, concert was rockin’, and it was one of the best days of my life. Thank you MuchMusic for giving us this opportunity!
