New Music Alert: Mew

Has anyone ever made you a mix CD where you find a new band or artist that changes your life so completely you run out and get everything that artist has ever produced, friend their myspace, and check back every few weeks just to see if they’ve updated (even though they may be “in the studio” and bands rarely update during that process)? Denmark’s Mew did that to me.

Yeah, okay, so I’m a huge geek.

Their music ranks very highly on my personal awesome list. Also, sometimes it is fun to listen to them just to hear the way singer Jonas Bjerre pronounces things. I am aware that some of their stuff (especially if you listen to the intro of “Introducing Palace Players”) sounds like music for spazzes. The beats are kinda disjointed and seem to come out of nowhere and at random. But then you can listen to a track like Comforting Sounds or the Zookeeper’s Boy, and probably be blown away. At the very least you can be pleasantly confounded by their song lyrics. I know I was.

These guys have been around for a while, but have somehow managed to avoid my own personal radar until recently. They haven’t had any huge singles in North America, which could explain it, but they have rocked the heck out of Western Europe. If name dropping is your thing, they’re gonna be supporting Kings of Leon in Germany, and Nine Inch Nails at a bunch of other European shows this summer, so automatically they should earn some cred with you, too.

SO, I’m super excited now because of their new album called (*deep breath*):

No More Stories
Are Told Today
I’m Sorry
They Washed Away
No More Stories
The World Is Grey
I’m Tired
Let’s Wash Away.

is coming out in August. Seriously, that is the title. I guess you can call it No More Stories for short. To shake up the waiting process, the band have put up two new songs on their myspace page, and have just announced the release of a five-song EP through iTunes. Yayness.

I know it's just eggs and a moth, but... so creepy.

Hopefully the EP will be enough to tide me over until August. Aaaand, even though the album artwork is kinda horrifying and mostly guaranteed to give me nightmares for the next couple weeks, I am totally digging these new Mew songs. You should be too.

  1. this band is not good but if you like boring music that’s not rockish than give this band a try. I can see why they haven’t had any hits here in North America and I believe they never will. Guys will not like this band but some women might because of the words in the song.

  2. I love Mew, and Rob clearly haven’t heard more than just one or two of their songs, after he came up with that statement - But I agree that their musik aren’t as rockish as Kings of Leon, but not much Indie Rock are.

Still they have made songs like “Special” and “She Spider”, which you can rock to :)

A band i would recommend to you peeps who like Keane, Band of Horses, Coldplay and musik like that. I promise you’ll get hooked.
