Timber Timbre. I had heard of them many a time but I had never really taken to time to stop, pause, and listen. After hearing through word of mouth of their greatness, and after their 2009 Polaris Music Prize long list nomination, I made a mental note to look them up. It was then that I found out that Timber Timbre had just been signed to my favorite Canadian label Arts & Crafts, and that Timber Timbre is basically just one very talented soul named Taylor Kirk.
Friday night I was lucky enough to see Timber Timbre live at Toronto’s Church of the Redeemer. Never having seen a concert at a church before, and still being a new Timber Timbre listener I didn’t know quite what to expect.
What I got was chills. The very best kind. Review and tour news after the jump.
The church’s pews were packed all the way to the back. The stage/alter was covered in lit candles that would serve as our only source of light, save that which was coming through the stain glass windows as the sunset. Talk about the setting the mood.
Taylor Kirk walked up to his chair guitar and microphone, accompanied onstage by three other musicians; one on saxophone, another on violin, and the third playing around with a distorter looping type device.
Timber Timbre began to play the entire new self-titled album. Every single bit of it was beautiful and haunting. A mix of blues, folk, and …pop? Yeah. Something like that. The church was calm and serene, yet filled with a particular energy I just couldn’t put my finger on. Breathtaking. Chills. One of the more amazing shows I’ve ever been too.
You can take a listen at the Timber Timbre myspace (you just missed their First Spin!), or check them out live.
