New Music From Scarlett Johansson

April 15th, 2008

So I was wandering around the internets today (as I do) and stumbled across, to my extreme surprise, a preview of Scarlett Johanson’s first track from her debut album, Anywhere I Lay My Head. Aside from the fact that this seems to have been coming down the pipe for so long that I actually forgot about it, I was kind of excited to hear what ScarJo did with her chosen Tom Waits covers (along with the one self-penned original song).

The preview track is the title track off the album, Anywhere I Lay My Head. It’s one of the Tom Waits songs and she definitely puts a new spin on the melancholy genius that is Mr. Waits. Does it do justice to the original? I’m going to say no but I’m definitely giving her points for attempted originality. As the fine ladies at BuzzSugar noted, her voice does seem reminiscent of a less-powerful Annie Lennox, not that you can really tell on this track as she’s kind of drowned out by the over production and accompanying synth tracks. Overall though, I’d have to admit it’s better than I expected…if my non-existant opinions could be classified as expectations.

So to conclude: On a scale of “actor to musician crossover” - it’s better than Teri Hatcher, but not quite Robert Downey Jr.

Have a listen! What did you think? Worth the wait?

UPDATE: It would appear the link’s been taken down. For those of you dying for a listen it appears you’ll now have to wait until the album is released on May 20. Until then, check out ScarJo covering an old Gershwin tune (it was on a charity album), Summertime. And actually… this track is way more flattering to her voice so it’s really a win/win for everyone.
