New.Music.Live.: A Vision of Vegas’ Future

November 30th, 2010

So, you know how Las Vegas seems to be the go-to destination for has-beens musical legends to set up shop and have all their devoted fans flock to see them?

For instance, musicians like Cher, Elton John and Celine Dion decided that instead of touring, they’d take up residence in a Vegas theatre and perform an extravagant and elaborate concert for the diehard worshippers willing to trek to the gambling Mecca of the world to see them.

Sure, these guys make the kind of music that your mom would listen to and dance awkwardly to at family weddings and you’d make fun of her for it. But she doesn’t care, because she thinks those guys are cool.

But, the scary reality is, one day, some of our favourite artists will head over to Vegas and we’ll book a weekend trip just to see them in a heartbeat.

So, the New.Music.Live. team got to thinking, which of today’s biggest music acts would make for an amazing Vegas show in 20 years? Let’s gaze into our crystal ball to find out…

Britney Spears
Take one look at her recent Circus tour and you’ll see Britney is made for the Vegas scene. She’s got tons and tons of hit songs that are sure to please everyone. And she can take the liberty of slowing down some of her songs to really showcase her voice (we know she’s not the best at dancing AND singing at the same time…but we still love her). Not to mention that as a mother of two, she’d probably enjoy not having to travel all around the world with Sean Preston and Jayden James.

Marilyn Manson
Sure he’s very dark and very weird…but, behind the glitz and glamour, isn’t Las Vegas kind of a dark and weird place? Marilyn’s twisted theatricality perfectly compliments the over-the-top atmosphere of the Vegas scene. And besides, after losing all your money at the poker table, you might need some angry rock songs to help you feel a little better.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z
We all agreed that Beyoncé would be a shoe-in for a Vegas residency. Her incredible stage presence, outlandish costumes and balanced repertoire of dance anthems and slow jams just scream “VEGAS!” But, we think it would be even better if her hubby Jay-Z got involved. It would be the “Beyoncé & Jay-Z Variety Show!” With both acts sharing the stage with their monster hits, and even some funny skits thrown in, this couple would be the biggest thing since Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, though infinitely cooler. Let’s make this happen.

The Black Eyed Peas
Not only do we think the Black Eyed Peas would make for a great Vegas show, but we also think they’d make a great Cirque du Soleil show. Can you imagine? All of their number one singles set to crazy acrobatics and insane laser shows? Bonus points if they can rig Fergie up to a harness so she can soar during her verse in “Boom Boom Pow”.

Jonas Brothers
These guys used to be top dogs when it came to making teen girls swoon. Then, Justin Bieber came along. So, perhaps Vegas isn’t that improbable for the young trio. We know they put on a killer live show and they love to ham it up fro the audience. Plus, we have a sneaking suspicion that they still have a lot of dedicated fans out there who would make the trip to see them…or at least stalk their hotel to snag a photo op!

Who do you think would be the perfect Vegas act in 20 years? Sound off in the comments below.
