Hey, it’s Brian from the New.Music.Live. team. Taylor Swift has been named Entertainer of the Year in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly which hits stands today. This caused quite the stir among the New.Music.Live. team during our morning meeting.
We all agreed that Taylor is pretty much one of the biggest stars out there today, but does she really deserve the title “Entertainer of the Year”? To us, to earn such a title means you have to be more than just a good singer. You need to be who everyone is talking about.
And while Taylor is a reoccurring topic of discussion, she’s pretty low-key, therefore, not really all that entertaining. I think it’s enough for her that she gets to snuggle with Jakey G. during their daily coffee dates. Colour me jealous.
So, the New.Music.Live. team came up with their own choices for who should have really been named Entertainer of the Year. Here we go!

Phoebe says, Justin Bieber
So who really should have been named Entertainer of the Year? It’s pretty obvious. Justin Bieber. Why? A) Because he’s my boyfriend and as his girlfriend I must support him and have confidence that he will win. B) He deserves this title since he gets about 4 hours of sleep every night trying to please the entire world. C) You can’t say there is anyone else who has put as much time and effort into entertaining as this boy… and D) Justin Bieber is THE MAN! Go Justin!

Bonn says, James Franco
We all know him as Peter Parker’s nemesis, but Mr. Franco goes far beyond the call of the usual super villain duty. This year, James has taken his career to various corners of the entertainment industry. He has written his own book of short stories entitled Palo Alto, extended his army of swooning female fans by joining the cast of General Hospital, played a poet in the drama Howl, starred in a 127 Hours, and has now been announced as co-host of the 2011 Academy Awards with Anne Hathaway all while attending Columbia University. Excuse me? Is this guy for real? James Franco is no superhero killer – he is the superhero! I think in the next Spider Man film they should turn the tables and make Spidey hunt Franco. That way we can cheer for him when he slays the arachnid, because let’s face it, this guy is much more than the Entertainer of the Year. He’s the role model/sex symbol/actor/writer/painter/brother from another mother of the year.

Lauren says, Joel McHale
It’s everybody’s favorite Entertainer of the Year, Joel McHale! I hope you read that in that high-pitched female voice from the intro of The Soup on E! Entertainment Television. What’s up Joel McHale!? You’re tall, tanned, and handsome, ridiculously funny, and amazingly sarcastic. You have so much talent but you remain kind of under the radar… which is very hot, btw. Those are just a few good reasons why you should have been Entertainer of the Year. Can we acknowledge that a lo-budge show like The Soup– which is taped in front of a green screen – has been around since 2004? His sitcom Community made its debut in late 2009 and its popularity has grown this year making it one of the freshest shows on TV. It’s a comedy that’s not annoying. I also noticed he started making a lot of red carpet and award show appearances. It seems his fame is on the rise and it’s well deserved. My final thoughts on Joel McHale… so meaty.

Brian says, Katy Perry
As much as I don’t like her, I have to be objective and say Katy Perry should be Entertainer of the Year. She’s got a hot Grammy-nominated album that has 3 hit singles so far. She’s performed at basically every awards show this year and she had a scandal with Elmo from Sesame Street. Not to mention that she married funnyman du jour Russell Brand this year, proving that she’s not only hot, but has an appreciation for a wicked sense of humour. Plus, she’s got boobs of wonder. They shoot whipped cream and fireworks. So, if that’s not entertaining, I don’t know what is.

Kathleen says, Kanye West
Yes, my pick is predictable. Yes, there is an argument to be made that Kanye’s album just hit stores so 2011 should be the year he gets this title. Well, you’re wrong. 2010 was the year of Kanye. Sure, he was hiding in Paris or Rome or wherever for half the year but when he came back, he came back hard. “Power” dropped in May and blew all of our minds. He performed at the MTV VMAs and upstaged everyone, including Ms. Swift. Then, he proceeded to rule the headlines and our iPods for the rest of the year with his weekly G.O.O.D Friday songs and his Yeezy-antics. Can you imagine the last few months without Kanye? I can’t. Imma let you finish Taylor, but Kanye West is the Entertainer of the Year.
What do you guys think? Do you agree with our picks? Did we leave someone out? Who rocked your world this year? Sound off in the comments below!
