New.Music.Live.: Raise a Flag and Call a Holiday

December 9th, 2010

Mash-up super star Girl Talk has a huge fan in Pittsburgh, city councilman Bill Peduto.

Girl Talk, a.k.a. Gregg Gillis, posted on his Twitter on Tuesday a photo of the paperwork which proclaimed December 7 as “Gregg Gillis Day” thanks to Peduto and a picture of him with city council. We can’t deny that he totally deserves it. He can manipulate surprising beats in incredible ways and I, Jessica, have been seen rocking out at his shows once or twice.

But, there are a million and a half other musicians that deserve their own days. This got us thinking about which ones have earned it. Check out our list below.

July 14, Montreal Arcade Fire Day
Montreal celebrates a big day already on July 14, Bastille Day, but we figure the hometown band deserves to be mixed into the celebration. The day celebrates the storming of the Bastille fortress-prison during the French Revolution and seeing Arcade Fire is like being stormed by an army. A stretch… maybe.

July 14, Detroit The White Stripes Day
Okay, yes, this is the same day as Arcade Fire Day but hear us out. On July 14, 1997 the band played their first show in Detroit at the Gold Dollar. So it is basically their birthday. The day we were blessed with their existence.

October 30, New York Lady Gaga Day
The night before Halloween is also called the Devil’s Night and we all know Lady GaGa has a bit of the red demon within her. Yes, she is angelic when advocating against Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and spreading a message of acceptance but girl has a mouth on her. Plus, she is the queen of the costume.

April 16, Stratford, ON Justin Bieber Day
This year, the first day of The Stratford Festival that celebrates theatre was on April 16. But, the city has started to become better known for their prodigal son, Justin Bieber. Although the festival is already popular with the theatre going crowd, heck, who knows, maybe it will drawn an even bigger crowd with the Biebs involved.

June 9, Manchester The Smiths Day
The Smiths Day is on June 9 because it is my birthday and I can do what I want. – Elvis
