PBS announced on Monday that MTV refugee Alexa Chung will be hosting a show called Thrift America where she essentially just thrift shops. Alexa will travel across America and some international cities hitting up thrift stores like your local Good Will and flea markets finding the best gems. I am so excited for this show. I am a huge thrift shopper myself and am ashamed today that I can only say one item I am wearing is a thrift purchase, my police boots.
Alexa is one of my fashion icons. She takes classic pieces like a trench coat, gingham dress or knit sweater and adds her own special twist to it. Alexa was a U.K. import to MTV in America but had her show, It’s On With Alex Chung, cancelled last year. The PBS press release calls Thrift America, “Antiques Roadshow meets the foodie romp Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.” Hello dream program.
Our office is filled with thrift shoppers too. It is a great way to find unique pieces for less before the mainstream brands co-opt the styles and make them popular. In a quick ask around our team, almost all of the ladies were clad with at least one thrifted item. Lily Allen has even opened up her own store featuring her vintage picks. Chung’s show will be a nice alternative to most fashion television shows that emphasize thousand dollar splurges and runway replication. Viva thrifting!
