New.Music.Live.: Why I Love The Drums

December 3rd, 2010

Hey, it’s Elvis from the New.Music.Live. team. Since it is almost the end of 2010, the entire world will shortly be inundated with “best of” lists. So before people stop caring and some of these lists get out of hand, I’m going to weigh in! My first pick of 2010 will probably be on a lot of critic’s best. I want to be the first on the New.Music.Live. team to claim The Drums because of their awesome music videos.

I have to admit that I was a little late getting on this train, but I got fully on board when I saw the video for “Me and The Moon.” The video is totally a throw back to all the best things about videos from the 80’s. Super cool spastic dancing from front man Jonathan Pierce, minimalistic art direction, pop art inspired sets and probably some of the best style I’ve seen in years on any band!

“Best Friend” is my second favorite video from The Drums. This video was made when the band was still a four piece before guitarist Adam Kessler left the band. This video is done all in one shot and takes place in one room. Okay, that may sound boring but it’s not. The video and song is definitely inspired by bands like The Cure. This simple video lets you definitely get to know the band and what they’re all about—great pop songs.

Lastly, I love the video for “Let’s Go Surfing.” For the longest time I thought the chorus was, “Obama, I want to go surfing” not, “Oh mama, I want to go surfing.” It’s still a great video of the band running along a beach in the middle of the night silhouetted by a spot light. I dare you not to fall in love with this band after watching this video.

Make sure to check out an amazing interview that MuchMusic.com did with The Drums.
