January 3rd, 2010

As 2009 just came to a close, it’s a good time to reflect on the past year we’ve had – from the a-holes to the legends and the one-hit-wonders to the record-breaking #1’s. Most importantly, it’s a good time to reflect on who really conquered this year, especially the newcomers. Two of the three being exports of Canada; these artists definitely made their mark this year. So lets ch-ch-ch-check it out:
3) He gets money, he gets paper, he’s Audrey Drake Graham. We know, we know, he was on Degrassi for 8 seasons but in 2009 he became just Drake, and he’s now a top selling rapper. His hit “Best I Ever Had” was played on radios, clubs and High School dances across the country and it seems over night, Drake became a star. Although he hasn’t had any #1’s in Canada yet we’re sure they’re on their way in 2010 with the release of his debut album, Thank Me Later. Even if he’s now a serious rapper, we’ll always think of him as the adorable Jimmy Brooks.
2) She tik toked the year away, it’s Ke$ha. Although some may call her a hot mess, we call her a hard worker. Her big break came soon after recording Flo Rida’s #1 single, “Right Round”, in which she sang back up vocals. Soon after recording “Right Round”, she was signed to RCA Records. She recorded the song “Tik Tok” which has been #1 in Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the US. Her debut album Animal hits store January 5th, with a few more guaranteed smash hits. This girl most definitely plays hard and works hard, let’s hope that hard work continues into 2010.
1) The shawty himself, Justin Bieber. We’ve all heard his story: posted videos of his talents on Youtube, was the subject of a bidding war between Justin Timberlake and Usher, and is now singing on stages across the world, including the White House. Justin released the first of his two-part album, My World, on November, 17th, 2009. My World debuted to #1 on the Canadian albums chart and has been certified Platinum in Canada. Because of the fact he was completely unknown last year and has now had a smash hit, “One Time”, on the Top 20 charts of Canada, U.S. and Germany, Justin is definitely the #1 newcomer of the year, and it doesn’t hurt he’s proudly Canadian.
