Nice To Naughty: Whitney Houston (Pt 1)

Whitney was just about as wholesome as white bread when she burst onto the scene in the early 80s. She graced the pages of Seventeen magazine inspiring us to wear the latest acid washed denim jackets (I have Whitney to blame for all of my fashion blunders) to encouraging us to taste the drylands of Canada by acting as a spokeswoman for the ginger ale company ‘Canada Dry.’ Whitney was a right saint.

Heck, even when she signed a recording contract with Clive Davis at the tender age of 19 she was spreading the good word of love to millions. With such heart-warming singles like You Give Good Love, Saving All My Love For You, How Will I Know, and The Greatest Love All you almost confused Ms. Houston for missionary of love. You really don’t get nicer than that.

Even Whit’s attempt at sexy still came across as bouncy and happy as a teletubby. Her first single off her second album Whitney, I Wanna Dance With Somebody had teenage girls and single middle-aged women in a frenzy. People related to her woes. Who doesn’t want someone to dance with them?

But things started to take a turn for the worse when she met New Edition member Bobby Brown. How the every woman, be capable of maintaining a drug den in her house? What went wrong? Stay tuned for the next edition of Whitney Houston: The Naughty Edition.
