Last night Nicki Minaj’s interview with Nightline reporter Juju Chang aired and it gave insight into the method behind being Nicki Minaj. The interview touched on Nicki’s youth in an abusive home and the connection she feels with her younger fans. What was most revealing was when Nicki Minaj spoke about the likening between her and Lady Gaga. Chang asked if the comparisons offended Minaj at all, to which the rapper responded, “Offend me? No. Irks me? Yeah. Because we are in completely different lanes.” Chang then asked her what the differences were between the artists, with Minaj explaining, “First of all, I’m a rapper. First of all, I’m from South side Jamaica, Queens, and I could say some really crazy lyrics right now, but I won’t.”
Nicki then took charge and asked Chang what about Minaj and Lady Gaga that struck her as being the same. Chang then offered up the use of wigs and over the top costumes as two things that linked Minaj and Gaga. Dissatisfied with the weak comparison, Nicki responded, “Every female in this game wears wigs.” Nicki also considered the sartorial likeness adding, “Over the top costumes? Eh, try again.”
It’s always refreshing to hear a female artist stand up against generalization. For Minaj’s artistry to be deduced to her physical appearance through wigs and costuming seemed a bit offensive and Minaj’s frustration was definitely present. During this segment of the interview her music was overshadowed by the comparison to another female artist.
