So I was sitting back in the MuchMusic.com trailer (and believe me, this was a nice trailer, located behind backstage) uploading photos to our website, and watching the live stream of the show, when I heard this phenomenal music.
I personally gravitate to music with heavy, deep, riffs and baselines with beat. I used to be a fan of electronic music, but social circumstance have moved me away from that type of music, though I still have a serious love for it. But this was something I hadn’t heard for years.
At the time I was so tired from a long 12 hour shift the day before, plus excitement of everything kept me awake most of the night. But barely trooping it, at 1pm, on Sunday, working away, when I heard this music, I could not help but say “Wendy, cover for me, I gotta check this out”.
I booked it over to front row center. At first I didn’t know who it was. I thought it was DJ Champion, but I saw about 3 guitars, I think a bass, and a vocalist. But off to the side a guys playing with an electronic mixer and a couple Mac laptops. I was like, “Damn! That is Champion!”
DJ Champion was an incandescent throbbing pulse of dementia at Virgin Fest.
It was unbelievable that he had such a lineup on stage. There were so many guitars and they were all intense rock, yet it had all the elements of electronica that I love. I couldn’t believe it. I’ve heard the single “No Heaven” before, but I didn’t really realize the intensity it has when performed live. Also, I’ve heard the singer’s voice before, maybe on The Prodigy’s last album. I can’t quite put my finger on it.
I danced like a madman for half hour straight. I was so happy by the end of the set I almost fell over and I almost cussed in front of some little kids. I have to see him again. He’s my new favourite DJ. I can imagine that a CD doesn’t do the live set justice, but I’ll judge that later.
Because he’s independent, he’s hard to research. You can check out his myspace.
