Nick’s Quick Review: Method Man - 4:21… The Day After

September 6th, 2006

Method ManMethod Man is a serious heavy weight in the rap game, but over the past 6 years his style has changed quite a bit. He just released his new album 4:21…the Day After which is his fourth full album. Now I’ve been a big fan of Mef’ since the mid ’90s when he was doing collaborations with 2pac and Biggie. Redman and Method wrote the soundtrack to my life as a teenager to be honest. Over the years things have changed. His last album The Prequel was a highly anticipated album, that rumour has it, was held back by The Rza, who’s the guru of the Wu-Tang Clan, Method Man’s core group.

Method brought the type of rap to the game that made rap famous. It’s heavy beats with tight, tight, intricate vocals in the background were what got me heavy into rap. But throughout his solo career you can notice that the changes. The beats got hi-tech production and more money was thrown at them, when the talent was being held back. His first two albums were whicked though his third, The Prequel was not. It was crappy beats with high energy yelling. Luckily Mef’s moved away from this. This album is way better than the last. It took me two solid listens but I found myself putting a couple tracks on repeat. The first 4 tracks on the album are wicked. They bring back the old school, with a twist of the new. The next dozen or so tracks are reminiscent of the style that The Prequel had, but, it’s on the better side of them.

With lot’s of collabs from the usual Streetlife as well as Styles P, Ginuwine, members from Wu-Tang, Redman and the Late Ol’ Dirty Bastard to name a few, I’d say this album is a definite improvement from his last. Presidential MC is a stellar track.

I give Method Man’s 4:21… The Day After 3 out of 5 Trashed Party Houses.
