NME has been counting down the greatest indie anthems EVER (I love these ‘definitive’ lists - if anything they generate discussion, cause they sure as hell aren’t in line with MY definitive list!). They’ve revealed the final list in full and wouldn’t ya know, Nirvana and Oasis figure in to the top 3 of all time. A friend of mine who blogged about the countdown a couple of days ago totally called it - it is actually impossible for NME to make a definitive list that doesn’t include Oasis, Nirvana, The Libs or The Stone Roses in the high numbers. Does this just mean the best years (the early 90s) are behind us? Most of the songs on their list, at least, are from that era. I wonder if a non-British list would be much different.
Remember that list they published last year of the greatest British albums of ALL TIME that had The Beatles and Arctic Monkeys butted up against one another in the top then?!
Please note: the list was published on January 23, 2006 and the Arctic Monkeys’ debut CD was released just THREE DAYS earlier and it was already in the top ten of all time. As Jem & The Holograms would say, that’s truly outrageous.
