Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote an amazing message board post about scalpers and scalping companies. You should read it. It’s hilarious to me that it took New Jersey, a congressman and Bruce Springsteen to figure out scalping is bad, but whatever works I guess.
When people like Jay-Z are signing $150 million deals with LiveNation do you really think it’s based on honest ticket sales? How many tours would it take to make that profit? For the Beatles, one. For Jay-Z? Good luck with that.
This whole time no one seems to care. Isn’t scalping illegal? I always thought it was but maybe not. Either way I have personally seen police standing within feet of scalpers who are yelling into the air about tickets they have, and the police don’t ever care. Maybe it’s just capitalism and I shouldn’t be bothered, but in my life I’ve spent hundreds, if not thousands, over face value on tickets and it makes me not want to go to concerts anymore. (And I sorta work in music.) But maybe that’s the solution. Everyone will get sick of paying so much and Jay-Z and LiveNation will be stuck with nothing but debt. Or maybe no one will notice until Bruce Springsteen tours again.

I already made the decision to not pay more than $100 per ticket for a concert. It just isn’t happening.
