NXNE Friday Night!

Matt & Kim rocking out

A Friday night spent NXNE-ing? That’s one great Friday.

My first stop of the night was Whippersnapper for Spiral Beach and Matt & Kim. Unfortunately the road was closed so I had to walk to the venue, and I only caught the last two minutes of Spiral Beach. From what I saw they put on quite the energetic show, and the crowd was eating it up. I was busy trying to work my way to the front and managed to get a few decent pictures. Spiral Beach have a tharsh kinda sound that I’m not really into but I get why people like it. They’re also from Toronto and I’m all for hometown support! Best of luck to em!

Now comes the show I’ve been looking forward to all week. Matt & Kim. I love these guys. Like The White Stripes they are a duo, one girl one guy. Unlike The White Stripes they are just simple happy and fun! Kim plays drums and Matt plays the keyboard. Oh and they’re a couple so it’s supper cute. Their music is bouncy, fun, and kick ass.

The hip Brooklyn couple hit the tiny stage of the tiny sweaty venue (filled to capacity), ready to rock and have fun. Matt talked to the crowd, getting them even more excited and dedicated songs to short people who couldn’t see them in the packed venue. They blasted through their 30 minute set, coving most of their singles and adding in crowd favourites. Midway through the show Kim stood up to share some of her day with us; apparently she had eaten some bad Thai food and wasn’t feeling the best, but she still was giving it her all for us. The show ended with the pair of them coving Europe’s “The Final Countdown” to the crowd’s joy. Loved it. Loved them. Check them out.

Time for a venue change! Over to The Hard Rock Café to see Sadie May Crash, another Toronto band! I met some of the band member back last fall during Virgin Festival, and like their music, they are rock and roll through and through. Their music reminds me of early No Doubt, especially vocalist Paige Boy. Not only is she stunning but she knows how to put on a show. Give em a listen here!

Last but certainly not least, I trekked it over to Clinton’s for yet another Toronto band titled Make Your Exit. Having not heard of them before, I didn’t know what to expect. Absolutely loved it. These guys should get signed to Arts&Crafts right now, seeing they’d fit right in. Ambient indie rock, saxophone included. Plus the guitarist looks just like Russell from Almost Famous (some Stillwater requests were shouted out by the audience). An amazing show. If you like music, you’ll love these guys. They closed the show by calling people to come sing along to The Boss’s “Dancing In The Dark” if that is any indication to how great they really are. Also some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Watch out Broken Social Scene.

Here are some pictures!
