OK Go announced today that they will be leaving their record label EMI after months of public animosity. In January the band’s frontman Damian Kulash wrote an op-ed scolding EMI for making their popular music videos on YouTube unembedable. To put things in perspective, the video for their newest single “This Too Shall Pass,” from their thrid album Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky, received 6 million views on YouTube in its first 6 days online.
Kulash spoke out to New York magazine’s Vulture blog about OK Go’s animosity with the record label EMI. He said the decision to leave the band was made about two weeks ago but they had to wait for EMI to respond and let them go. He also said that one of the reasons they left was that the label wasn’t willing to promote the album on the radio.
But based on what Kulash says, it seems like they will be moving ahead fine with their new company Paracadute, which they have been developing for a while. Also, we can look forward for some new videos from the band. “We’re shooting another video next week, and we’re shooting a very ambitious one in June with my sister, who made the treadmill video with us,” he said. “The next video is sort of — we’re trying to work with time as a choreographic element. And the one after that involves a group of very talented individuals and I can’t say anything more besides that.”
