Other words Webster needs to add to the dicionary

May 20th, 2014

It’s that time of the year where Merriam-Webster chooses new words to add to its dictionary. This year 150 new words have found a home in Webster’s dictionary.

Some of the most notable words include selfie (an image of oneself taken by oneself using a digital camera especially for posting on social networks), tweep (a person who uses the Twitter online message service to send and receive tweets), catfish (a person who sets up a false personal profile on a social networking site for fraudulent or deceptive purposes), and hashtag (a word or phrase preceded by the symbol # that classifies or categorizes the accompanying text). Also poutine was added, how is it Webster is only now recognizing poutine as a word?

Webster says that the new addition of words reflects the “growing influence technology is having on human endeavor, especially social networking, once done mostly in person.”

I appreciate the fact that selfie and hashtag are now dictionary defined words but I still feel Webster left out some pivotal words that clearly represent our culture. Here are some words I feel Webster should have added to their dictionary.

Yasss: (adverb) an overly excited version of yes.
Example: Yasss! Michael Jackson’s hologram performance at the Billboard Music Awards was amazing.

Turnt/Turnt up: (adjective) the act of getting intoxicated and letting loose and having fun.
Example: Tonight’s going to be so much fun, we’re getting turnt up.

giphy (2)

Throw shade: (verb) the act of subtly talking trash or speaking down about a person
Example: Lady Gaga was throwing shade at Katy Perry on twitter.

giphy (3)

Surfboard/Serfbort: (noun) a sexual position popularized by Beyonce in Drunk in Love.
Example: “I fill the tub up halfway then ride it with my surfboard”

Cray/cray cray: (adjective) someone or something that is crazy.
Example: That concert last night was cray cray.

giphy (5)

Solange: (adverb) to be so mad at someone that you kick and punch them; preferably in an elevator.
Example: that girl was so mad she full out Solanged him.

giphy (4)
