Our Work-Out Playlists*

February 21st, 2008

NME.com is reporting that music makes us healthier. Now this isn’t exactly new knowledge, but I do think it’s worth repeating. We’ve all heard the studies that state listening to classical music when doing homework helps you retain more information, and playing music to your baby while it’s still in your tummy will… I dunno exactly – make your baby the next Mozart..? Well whatever the case, music is good for you.

Apparently music is used to help stroke victims regain memory. And supposedly listening to jazz music before bed will help you get a better night’s sleep. Also, studies show that music makes exercise more fun, thus aiding in weight loss.

It’s this last little tidbit that I’d like to zero in on. Now that that New Year’s resolution of getting to the gym is starting to lose its appeal, it’s important to stay motivated. So our MuchMusic.com team has offered their top “work-out” songs off their iPods (or other respective mp3 player):

Kat: “I have a workout playlist!”

Avril Lavigne f. Lil Mama – Girlfriend
Michael Sembello – Maniac
Haddaway – Rock My Heart
Britney Spears – Toxic
OneRepublic – Apologize (“Ideal for squats”)

Wendy: “Eliminating choices is not an option.”

M.I.A. – Bamboo Banger
Mark Ronson feat. Lily Allen – Oh My God
Benny Benassi – Satisfaction
Cool Kids – Black Mags

Mark: “Lame but effective.”

Kanye – Diamonds are forever
Linkin Park – Numb
Daft Punk – Alive 2008 – any track

Dan:

Loverboy – Working for the Weekend

Klye: “I listen to random shite when I work out. Mellow music motivates me so I may abstain from this survey.”

So these are the very-varied and random songs that make us run, jog, lift, step, elliptical, whatever. What do YOU listen to when exercising? Let’s help motivate each other and continue to have a healthy music-filled 2008!

* This blog post was written purely as motivation to get me to the gym. I hate that place.
