Pretty Little Liars: Emily Fields

Played by Canadian Shay Mitchell (check her out at this year’s MMVAs) the character of Emily Fields went from closet case to beating off girls with sticks! She starting “exploring” with bestie Alison but the fling was cut short when Alison said she likes dudes. Oh, and she was murdered. In flies bad girl Maya who helped bring Emily out of her closet and out to the public. BFFs Aria, Hanna and Spencer were supportive right from the get go, but Mrs. Fields did not understand being gay. Faster than a text from “A” Maya was sent packing after the ‘rents found drugs on her. What do you do when a bad girl breaks your heart? You date a girl who tried to kill you. Yes, Paige tried to drown Emily, but they’ve worked things out since. But they couldn’t progress with Paige being in the closet (and calling Emily out for special treatment being gay) and they broke up. Sexy Samara soon entered the picture and they’re now officially dating in the open.

Plus, they’ve given a new twist to the common girl-falls-in-love-with-her-gay-best-friend: bad boy Toby fell for Emily, but has since become one of her closest friends. Aww…

Teen Wolf: Danny

We don’t know much about Danny boy yet (played by Keahu Kahuanui) but we do know he’s openly gay, plays on the lacrosse team with all the other guys, and the coach even thinks of hooking him up from time to time. We also know he’s not a werewolf (well, we hope – at this rate anybody could be a closeted werewolf!). Danny’s also besties with the resident jock on the block, Jackson (that’s flipping the whole f*ghag stereotype on it’s feet!). But Stiles is awfully concerned with looking attractive to Danny, so only time will tell if there’s another ‘mo in Beacon Hills.

Degrassi: Riley Stavros & Fiona Coyne

Played by Argiris Karras and Annie Clark, these actors have perfectly mirrored coming out in ways everyone cal relate to. No wolves, or “A” or supernatural anything – it’s all about the realistic high school setting.

Riley was deep in the closet – as star athlete, he had to date girls! – but eventually met and dated Zane Park in secret. After Zane got frustrated keeping their relationship secret, Riley had to fight to win him back. He tried to out himself to his mother and, after facing complete denial, came out to his team AND a college scout. He’s out and proud and with Zane now, so it’s all good.

Fiona started off dating guys, but kept doing the wrong things. She kissed her brother, became an alcoholic, ditched her prep school and became depressed. But after dating transgendered student Adam Torres, she realized she was attracted to girls. This pissed off Adam, since he identifies as being a male, but it was a breakthrough experience for Fiona. She finally came out of the closet to Anya. She crushed on BFF Holly J., but managed to work through it and not make things awkward when Holly J. found out.

Hopefully Fiona will have an easier time at love when Degrassi Season 11 premieres Monday July 18th on MuchMusic!

Hard Times: Max Owens

What to say about Max Owens? Played by Jayson Blair, he’s the king at Pinkerton High – making fun of those uglier, less popular, and not getting as much hot-girl-ass as he does…except hot-girl-ass isn’t what floats his boat. In a shocking twist the second season finale revealed Max has a secret boyfriend no one knows about…not even his bitchy girlfriend Robin Pretnar. The only person who knows is R.J. Berger (and eventually his ex Jenny Swanson). Instead of getting revenge and outing him, R.J. kept it to himself and took the high road while Max stayed in the closet. Are they friends now? Who knows. But their relationship has definitely changed.

Gossip Girl: Eric van der Woodsen

The youngest van der woodsen, Eric (played by Connor Paolo) was outed on purpose by Georgina Sparks and her bag of evil tricks. In effect, the outing actually brought family closer together (cause in that family, the amount of scandals that happen on a daily basis totally overshadows someone coming out of the closet!) and the van der Woodsens have been supportive of his many boyfriends (Asher, Jonathan, Elliot) ever since. Recently, Eric’s been single and looking in all the wrong places for love (remember Damian Dalgaard? Cute, but dangerous). Let’s hope he finds it in the fall.
