Pemberton Festival: Nardwuar, Locals & Other Crazies

Here I am! Back from Pemberton Festival… I survived. Some of you reading might be like, “Huh? Pemberton Festival, what is that?” I sort of have this impression that people living anywhere east of Alberta had no idea this HUGE outdoor festival was even happening this weekend. Hey Canada, welcome to the world! This was one of the biggest music festivals of the summer. Maybe not in size (there were 40,000 people in attendance), but because of the lineup of bands that drove hours and hours to play…

Serj Tankian, Sam Roberts Band, Metric, Vampire Weekend, The Flaming Lips, Tom Petty, The Tragically Hip, My Morning Jacket, Interpol, Death Cab for Cutie, N.E.R.D, Jay-Z and Coldplay were some of the major acts playing at the base of Mount Currie in Pemberton, BC.

It was super hot on Day 1, it was extremely dusty, there were lots of obnoxious drunk people, yes! traffic was rammed every which way (of course, it’s a festival, there’s going to be traffic duh!), and I got a cold/flu kinda thing, but enough complaining! I’ll let the newspapers take care of that. Here are the best things that happened at Pemberton Festival 2008!

1. Adam: “The Naked Guy”

As far as I know, there was only one instance of streaking that happened at Pemberton and everyone on site was talking about it. Of course WE made it happen. Adam “The Naked Guy” was a very nice and delightfully drunk young man that I met on Day 2. He only wore a blue speedo all weekend! Long story short, I stole a $100 bill from him, he chased after me naked, gave hundreds of people high-fives, and then I made him buy us drinks with that $100… we got all of it on tape, so keep watching MuchMusic to see what went down.

2. Serj Tankian

Thank you, Serj, for taking time to talk to MuchMusic… Not many artists on the mainstage did! Serj is such a genuinely nice dude. He’s hilarious too! I thoroughly enjoyed talking to him, mainly because we spent about 5 to 6 minutes on the topic of c***s. He likes that word you know, and so do I. To quote Serj Tankian, “Pemberton Festival was c***alicious!”

3. Raging Locals

I’m so sorry to Matt Leaf, my camera guy and friend! We were looking for an interview location with Black Mountain and we went across the street to a parking area that a local resident set up. I guess the dude was worried that we had a camera, and right away was majorly confrontational. We didn’t even do anything, started to walk away as we saw this guy was not happy (and was clearly sloshed), and he threw this glass mug of whiskey right in Matt’s face. It got all over him! WE handled ourselves well, but if I could have injured this dude, or let Matt injure him severely, we would have. But being in the MEDIA of course we can’t do that :)
4. N.E.R.D.

Best performance of the weekend! They took the stage 15 to 20 minutes late, making the first and ONLY scheduling issue the whole weekend, but then they brought it! I think everyone in the field was moving to N.E.R.D. And the best part, Pharrell brought up all these chicks from the audience to dance on stage! Haha and he was totally into it. He lifted off his shirt like 3 times… I saw a couple girls lick his body from his waist to his chest… Awesome!

5. Nardwuar vs Jay-Z

What trumps all of this stuff though is that Nardwuar got to interview Jay-Z. On Nardwuar’s behalf I will tell you that this has been in the works since June 2nd when he interviewed N.E.R.D. You may recall from watching MuchMusic, Pharrell being so totally blown away by Nardwuar’s interview. Well he said he could hook him up with Jay at Pemberton Festival. There’s a bit of a story as to how it all worked out, but he did it.

6. Bacardi

Being from MuchMusic we certainly don’t have the exact same festival experience as the attendees, that’s for sure! Thank you to Bacardi for hooking up a media and VIP tent with free drinks and food all weekend! You were our lifeline the whole weekend! Or should I say, the mojitos were our lifeline the whole weekend.

Pemberton Festival 2008 was a success in the eyes of MuchMusic! We’ll see you next year!
