MuchMusic and Secret have partnered up to stand up against bullying with Mean Stinks, a place where you can find support and reach out to those who have been bullied and those who have been a bully. Our very own Phoebe Dykstra took part for this initiative and shared her experiences and why Mean Stinks is so important:
I think high school is such a tough time for so many. The reason you are there is to learn yet sometimes, learning can be the last thing on your mind. This campaign is so important to show that the coolest thing you can do is stand up against a bully. Be love. You will be remembered for that!
I have been bullied most of my life. I know now, that I was bullied because I wasn’t afraid to speak my mind, stand out or be myself. People didn’t know how to deal with that. I thought about wearing “normal” clothes, listening to the music that everyone else thought was cool and only saying things that I knew would be accepted by all BUT I’m so glad I stayed “Phoebe”. I may not be where I am today! Be YOU! When you leave high school you will see how it is a time to help you grow, test your strength, it’s a part of your journey. Life after high school is the best!
My advice to people being bullied is to LOVE. I know when people are yelling names at you down the hall or making you feel like you are the tiniest piece of inconspicuousness it can be hard. But, remember to love yourself. You are so awesome and unique and who wants to be like everyone else anyways!
