Parisian band Phoenix tore through the Phoenix concert theatre like a phoenix on Monday, a day I have renamed “Phoenix”. On a scale from 1 to Phoenix, I rate this show Phoenix plus infinity. Aaaand now I’ll stop.
But seriously, this show was stellar. Crisp, joyous, dance-tacular and a clear indication that these dapper gentlemen are well on the rise. I guess a musical slot on Saturday Night Live in April doesn’t hurt, eh?
The setlist kicked off with the one-two punch of my dreams: “Lisztomania” followed by “Long Distance Call”. Omg. Way to whip the crowd into a frenzy. And these french lads have so much steez - just standing up there, all cool, playing amazing, melodic music and cracking appreciative smiles when the crowd would voice their enjoyment. It seemed like they may have been a little overwhelmed by the love, actually. Thomas grabbed his signature microphone cord and they proceeded with a near-perfect set peppered with songs from their first two albums United (”Too Young”) and Alphabetical (”Run Run Run”), but mainly focused on tracks from It’s Never Been Like That and Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. “Rally”! “Consolation Prizes”! “Sometimes In The Fall!” “Napoleon Says”! (Do you wish you were there yet?) (If you were there, I bet you’re glad you were). But wait, that’s not all. “Fences”! “Lasso”! A gorgeous “Love Like A Sunset”! “Girlfriend”! I’m getting all overwhelmed just thinking about it.
Finishing with “1901″, Thomas waded into the crowd for chants of “falling, falling, falling” - and ended up right in our faces. Then he climbed up on a table where I grabbed the shot below, the closest thing I could get to proof that it happened:

Anyway. The show was so fun and so well-played that it was ridiculous. If you like Phoenix and get a chance to see them, do it - and dance your face off.

For Fun:
