You know how there are some artists that you really wished you got into but just never got around to it…Ben Kweller is that artist for me…Last night I saw him perform a free show at the Berkley Church in Toronto, as part of a televised series that is being shot this week called ‘Beautiful Noise,’ and let’s just say my appetite for some hearty pop music was fulfilled.
Though I left feeling satisfied, I also left feeling slightly disenchanted by some of Mr.Kweller’s lyrics, especially on the song ‘Thirteen.’ Here is an excerpt:
We questioned religions
Fed bread to the pigeons
Are you serious? Pigeons and religions? Lines like this, wouldn’t have been so noticeable if they were masked by some catchy hooks. There’s no hiding Mr.Kweller’s writing talents, or in this case lack of, throughout the ballads. In fact, it almost got to a point where his music became so unlistenable as a result of it. I just don’t understand how the same man that penned the song ‘Falling’ can also write some ridiculously sloppy songs (check out his latest record). Lucky for him, he’s got one hell of a voice and a great stage presence. In the end, all the positives weigh out all of the negatives.
