Pitch Perfect hits every note

October 1st, 2012

Every few years a movie comes along that becomes an asterisk in the account of repetitive, mundane and trivial movie lists. There are no funny movies about females in high school, except Mean Girls. Romantic comedies are all the same, except for When Harry Met Sally. No films about cheerleading have ever carried any substance, except for Bring It On. Well, it’s time to add one to the list. Pitch Perfect is not only a hilarious film about fitting in at college and doing so by joining an a-capella club, it’s just plain hilarious.

With a stand out cast including Anna Kendrick (Up In The Air), Skylar Astin (Hamlet 2), Brittany Snow (Hairspray), Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids), Anna Camp (The Good Wife) and Adam DeVine (Workaholics), Pitch Perfect is the perfect comedy for people who like comedies.

Kendrick, who seems to be able to adapt to playing any age, is reluctant college freshman Becca, who has dreams of moving to LA and becoming a music producer. When her father forces her to instead enroll at Barden University and make an attempt at fitting in before agreeing to help her move to LA, Becca finds her first real group of female friends in the dysfunctional a-capella group The Bellas.

Skylar Astin plays Becca’s movie-obsessed love interest Jesse, who *gasp* sings with their biggest competition, The Treble Makers. Throw in Anna Camp and Brittany Snow as the battling leaders of The Bellas, along with head to head scenes from Bridesmaid’s break-out star Rebel Wilson and Workaholic’s hilarious Adam DeVine and you’ve got yourself one aca-redible comedy.

I’d be remiss to not mention the hilarious duo of a-Capella commentators John Michael Higgins and Pitch Perfect producer Elizabeth Banks, who leave viewers wanting more after each scene. While Pitch Perfect stands strong as a competitor for top comedy of the year, this should not take away from the incredible music arrangements and performances throughout the film. Funny, heartfelt and yes, even inspiring, Pitch Perfect is a film poised to be added to the asterisk lists of classics.

Rating: 10 a-capella puns out of 10
